I have been a loyal TiVo user for 16 years now, but for the last year or so things just haven’t been the same. Functions that have worked perfectly for years, and I mean simple things like automatically recording all episodes of a particular TV show, have stopped functioning correctly. Certain keystrokes on the remote that have been fine for years no longer work. For some time now the quality has gone to shit and I didn’t know why.

Well, yesterday I discovered that in September 2016 some company called Rovi changed their name to TiVo and bought the DVR pioneer. The quality and ease of use that were the hallmarks of this device are gone. I’ve seen it time and time again, where some crappy company buys up a good, but struggling, company and cashes in on their good name and reputation. I can’t believe that I’m about to say this, but after 16 years I’m probably done with them, and this really saddens me. I’m sure that I can find a cheaper alternative that will be nearly as good, something I didn’t think would be possible in years past.

Bye bye TiVo, it’s been a good run...

Very accurate.

I used to love Withings products, but now that they’re owned - and renamed to - Nokia, I expect things to go to you-know-where in a wicker you-know-what.

Got a midrange Roamio, but it’s hardly employed now - we cut the cord. The unit switches back and forth between Prime, Netflix, Vudu, and a few others. When it served to tape shows it doubled on some and fucked up some season passes. Also got a PS3 but that serves as a bluray player only. I’m probably doing it all wrong ...

That setup sounds very similar to mine. PS3 for Blu-ray, TiVo for OTA, Chromecast for YouTube and Roku for streaming other things. I haven’t had cable since 2010 except for the cable modem. The cable company gave me the Roku 3 and added streaming of a number of cable channels with no increase to my bill, and I can watch most cable channels I receive on demand via apps.

With TiVo handling OTA I find that I discover a few new shows and it keeps me from binge watching, although I have to admit that a lot of my TV viewing is more as background noise. Is it worth $129/year? That’s the question right now. It’s bothering me that TiVo has gone from awesome to average over the last few years. Like so many things in life, the price has remained the same (or gone up only a little) but the quality has diminished. There’s just so much low-quality crap out there that it’s irritating when you think about how much better things were previously. My god, that makes me sound so incredibly old...

I have a amazon Fire TV and am a big supporter of it combined with Kodi. Inside Kodi I have an HD Homerun app that hooks to my HD Homerun which is hooked to my digital antenna for OTA.

On the fire TV you can use the Prime/Netflix and never even bother recording/taping shows (Or use Kodi for it’s more...nefarious...purposes and you don’t have to record/tape ever either haha)
